February half-term is the most expensive week of the ski season for UK families. Demand from British schools collides with holidays across Europe, and prices for flights, packages and accommodation rise to match. If you are tied to school dates, you cannot avoid it entirely, but you can take the sting out of it.
In short: confirm your school dates early, start with the best-value family resorts in the Post Office Travel Money Ski Report 2026, avoid the busiest French holiday weeks where you can, self-cater, and only pay for the lift pass, hire and lessons your family will really use. All prices in this guide are from published sources and will change, so always check current figures for your own dates.
Know your dates early
In England and Wales, February half-term usually falls in mid-February, but dates are set locally and can differ between councils and schools. Scotland has its own February break. Check your school’s calendar first, then start looking as early as you can, as the cheapest family beds tend to go first. GOV.UK explains that term and holiday dates are published by your local council, and that Scotland and Northern Ireland set their own.
If two children are at different schools, or one is at a school with its own calendar, check both. A difference of a single day can change which flights and transfer days work for you.
Taking children out of school in term time to get a cheaper week can be tempting, but it can be costly. GOV.UK says councils in England can fine each parent £80, rising to £160 if it is not paid within 21 days, and repeat absences can lead to court. Check your council’s rules before you weigh it against a lower holiday price.
Why half-term costs more
Prices follow demand. During February half-term, UK families are all trying to travel in the same week, and in many years that week overlaps with school holidays in other European countries. Tour operators, airlines and accommodation owners know this, so the same apartment or flight can cost noticeably more than it does a week or two either side.
On the mountain, lift pass and ski school prices are usually set for the season, but some resorts use peak and off-peak pricing, and ski schools can fill up. Busier slopes also mean longer lift queues, so you may get less skiing for the same money.
Pick a family value resort
The Post Office Travel Money Ski Report 2026 ranked Passo Tonale in Italy as the best value resort for families for the second year running, followed by Bardonecchia (Italy), Bansko (Bulgaria) and Kranjska Gora (Slovenia). The report compares on-mountain costs such as lift passes, hire and lessons for two adults and two children, so add flights and accommodation on top.
Here is the full family top ten from the report. Totals are for two adults and two children aged six and eight, and cover a six-day lift pass, ski and boot hire, ski school, lunch and drinks on the slopes, using December 2025 exchange rates.
| Rank | Resort | Country | Family total (2026 report) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Passo Tonale | Italy | £1,796.78 |

| 3 | Bansko | Bulgaria | £2,093.22 |
| 4 | Kranjska Gora | Slovenia | £2,116.95 |

Look for family-friendly details that save money, such as free lift passes for young children, free child equipment hire (Passo Tonale offers this, according to the report) and nursery slopes close to where you are staying.
What to look for in a half-term resort
- Nursery slopes near your bed. If the beginner area is a bus ride away, you lose time every morning and may need extra lift tickets.
- Free or cheap passes for young children. Age bands vary a lot between resorts, so check the exact cut-off dates for your children.
- Ski school capacity. Half-term is the busiest week for children’s lessons. Book as soon as your dates are fixed.
- Traffic-free resorts. Places such as Le Corbier, which its resort describes as fully pedestrianised, are easier with small children.
- Snow reliability. February is usually mid-winter in the Alps, but higher resorts, or those with good snowmaking, are a safer bet if you can only go one week a year.
Check other countries’ holidays
Half-term is busy partly because other countries are on holiday at the same time. French school holidays are staggered by zone through February and into March, so some weeks are busier than others in French resorts. A quick check of the dates can help you pick a quieter option.
For 2026-27, Service Public lists the French winter holidays running from 6 February to 8 March 2027 across the three zones. If your half-term week falls when only one zone is off, French resorts may be less crowded than when two zones overlap. Our guide to cheap skiing in France has more on picking a French resort around these dates. Italy, Bulgaria and Andorra have their own national and regional holidays too, so it is worth checking the resort’s own calendar or asking your accommodation how busy the week usually is.
Package or do it yourself?
For a family, a package that bundles flights, transfers and accommodation can be easier, and some include or discount lift passes, hire and lessons. Booking each part yourself can work out cheaper if you are flexible on airports and happy to arrange transfers, but it takes more time and you carry more of the risk if something changes.
Whichever route you take, compare like with like. Write down what each quote includes: flights, hold luggage, ski carriage, transfers, accommodation, meals, lift passes, hire and lessons. A package that looks dearer can turn out cheaper once you add everything up. If you book a package that includes a flight, check that it is ATOL protected. The Civil Aviation Authority explains that ATOL is financial protection if the travel company fails, and that it is not the same as travel insurance.
Self-cater and share
- A self-catered apartment lets you cook most meals, which adds up quickly for a family of four.
- Travelling with another family and sharing a bigger apartment or chalet can lower the cost per person.
- Pack lunches for the slopes. Mountain restaurant lunches for a family are one of the biggest daily costs.
Our places to stay guide compares apartments, hotels and chalets, and our what to do guide has cheap ideas for the afternoons and evenings when little legs are tired.
Cut the on-mountain costs
- Lift passes: beginners and young children rarely need the full linked area. A local or beginner pass can be much cheaper. See our guide to saving money on a ski pass.
- Hire: compare prices before you go, and check whether children’s hire is discounted or free. Our budget packing list covers what to borrow, hire or buy.
- Lessons: half-day group lessons usually cost less than full-day ones and are often enough for young children.
- Food and drink: a flask of hot chocolate and a packed lunch saves money every day.
- Kit you already own: helmets, gloves, goggles and base layers can often be borrowed from friends or bought second-hand.
When to book
For half-term, earlier is usually better. Family-sized apartments and the most convenient flights go first, and children’s ski school places can fill up. If you see a good price for your dates, check the cancellation terms and book.
Late deals do happen, but they are a gamble for half-term because the dates are so popular. If you are waiting, have a shortlist ready so you can move quickly, and be prepared to be flexible on resort or airport.
Consider Easter instead
If you can choose, Easter can be a better-value school holiday for skiing, especially at high-altitude resorts where snow lasts. When Easter falls late, prices and crowds can ease, but pick a resort with a good snow record for spring.
If your children are not yet at school, January and late March are often better value than any school holiday week, with quieter slopes and more choice of accommodation.

Half-term ski holiday FAQs
Which is the cheapest resort for a February half-term ski holiday?
For on-mountain costs, Passo Tonale in Italy was the best value family resort in the Post Office Travel Money Ski Report 2026, followed by Bardonecchia and Bansko. Flights and accommodation can change the picture, so compare full trip prices for your dates.
When is February half-term in 2027?
It depends on where you live. Dates are set by local councils and schools in England and Wales, and separately in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Check your own school’s calendar before you book anything.
Is it cheaper to ski at half-term in Italy or France?
On the 2026 Post Office figures, Italian resorts came out cheaper on the mountain than French ones for families. France can still work if you find a good-value apartment and avoid the weeks when French zones overlap.
Do I need travel insurance for a family ski trip?
Yes. Buy travel insurance with winter sports cover that includes mountain rescue. A free GHIC gives access to state healthcare in EU countries, but it is not a replacement for insurance.
