Where to go

The cheapest ski resorts in Europe for UK skiers

Where your pound goes further, what you give up for the lower price and where the money tends to disappear.

In short

If you want a cheap ski holiday, where you go matters more than almost anything else. Italy and Bulgaria dominate the value rankings, Andorra and parts of France can work well, and a few wildcards in Norway, Slovenia and Finland did surprisingly well. Switzerland and Austria are where costs climb.

Most rankings below come from the Post Office Travel Money Ski Report 2026 (last updated 18 December 2025, using December 2025 exchange rates). It compares a six-day lift pass, ski and boot hire, ski school, lunch and drinks on the slopes. It does not include flights, transfers or accommodation, so treat it as a guide to on-mountain costs.

How we judge value

Total on-mountain cost

Lift pass, hire, lessons and food together, not just one headline price.

Getting there

Flight options from UK airports and the length of the transfer.

Where you sleep

A good supply of self-catered and budget beds keeps prices down.

The skiing you get

A bigger area or better snow record can justify a slightly higher price.

Country guide

Italy

Italy was the standout country in the 2026 Post Office report. Six Italian resorts were in the top ten for adults, and Italian resorts took first place for both adults and families.

Other Italian names in the adult top ten were Cervinia, Kronplatz and La Thuile.

Bardonecchia

1st adults2nd families

In Piedmont near the French border. It came first for adults in 2026 even after a 10.5% rise in costs. It is a real town as well as a ski resort, which helps keep food and accommodation prices grounded.

Sauze d’Oulx and Sestriere

5th and 6th adults

Both are part of the Vialattea, which says it offers around 400 km of slopes linking Italian resorts with Montgenèvre in France. That is a lot of skiing for a value destination.

Passo Tonale

1st families

Best value resort for families for the second year running, and the report notes it offers free child equipment hire. It sits high on a pass, which tends to help snow conditions.

Livigno

Duty-free area

A duty-free area of Italy, so everyday shopping can be cheaper than in many Alpine resorts. The official site lists 115 km of slopes. It is fairly remote, so factor in the transfer.

Bulgaria

Bulgaria has long been the go-to for UK skiers chasing the lowest prices. In the 2026 report Borovets was 2nd for adults and Bansko was 4th for adults and 3rd for families, although Bansko’s costs rose by 23.3%.

  • Bansko: a gondola runs from the edge of town up to the ski area. The operator lists around 75 km of marked runs including ski roads. With one main lift from town, peak mornings can be busy, so check recent visitor feedback.
  • Borovets: Bulgaria’s oldest mountain resort, about an hour or so from Sofia airport, with a compact ski area that suits beginners and intermediates.

The trade-off is a smaller ski area than the big Alpine resorts. For beginners and relaxed intermediates that rarely matters. Confident skiers may run out of new terrain by the end of the week.

Country guide

Andorra

Andorra sits between Bulgaria and the Alps on price. Grandvalira says it has 215 km of skiable terrain across seven sectors, including Pas de la Casa and Soldeu, which makes it the largest ski area in the Pyrenees.

Soldeu was the only resort in the 2026 Post Office report where costs fell (down 3.7%), and Arinsal was 8th for families. Andorra is not in the EU, so check your phone roaming terms and your travel insurance before you go.

France: value angles

France is not a budget country overall, but it can still work if you choose carefully:

  • Le Corbier was 7th for adults in 2026, one of the few French resorts near the top.
  • Big purpose-built resorts such as Les Arcs and La Plagne have a large supply of self-catered apartments. Together they form Paradiski, which lists 425 km of runs. A single-resort pass can be cheaper if you do not need the whole area.
  • Timing matters more in France than almost anywhere, because French school holidays are staggered by zone.

Wildcards worth a look

Geilo, Norway

3rd for adults and 6th for families in 2026. Beitostølen was 5th for families. Not a country many think of as cheap, but these smaller resorts did well.

Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

4th for families, down from 2nd after a 23.5% rise in costs. Compact, and handy for families with younger children.

Pyhä, Finland

A new entry at 7th for families. A very different kind of winter trip, so check daylight hours and transfer times.

Know before you go

Where costs climb

Swiss and Austrian resorts were the most expensive in the 2026 Post Office report, with prices in and around double those of the cheapest places. Saalbach in Austria was the most expensive family resort surveyed. That does not mean you should never go, only that you will need to work harder to find a deal.
